Waldorf, Lehman Make Cut at Open

Duffy Waldorf of Valencia and Tom Lehman, the former assistant pro at the Westlake Country Club, both bettered par Friday to make the cut in the U.S. Open in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Waldorf fired a two-under 70, giving him a two-day total of 142 and leaving him in a tie for eighth place, seven shots behind leader Gil Morgan.

Lehman was a stroke back after slipping to a 74 Friday. He shot an opening-round 69 Thursday.

Bob Burns of Granada Hills, a former standout at Cal State Northridge, shot a 76 Friday to finish at 151, missing the cut by three shots. But he had the consolation of finishing in a tie with four-time Open winner Jack Nicklaus, who also missed the cut after rounds of 77 and 74.

Burns and Nicklaus were four strokes better than Simi Valley’s Mitch Voges, the reigning U.S. amateur champion. Voges had rounds of 78 and 77.
