Woman Receiving First Aid Is Killed on Freeway

A 24-year-old Bell Gardens woman who was receiving first aid on the Long Beach Freeway after an accident was killed when an alleged drunk driver struck her and dragged her 75 feet, authorities said Sunday.

Three other people--including an emergency medical technician and the driver--were also seriously injured in the accident, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday near the Firestone Boulevard exit, said California Highway Patrol Officer Carol Kelly.

The third person injured at the scene was not identified. Authorities had no details about how that person was involved in the accident.

Kelly said Maria Martinez, who had been thrown from her car in a collision, was hit as she was receiving first aid from an emergency medical technician. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

The technician, Larry Parks, 30, of Alta Loma, was thrown about 100 feet, Kelly said. Parks was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where he was in serious condition Sunday, a hospital spokesman said.

The driver’s name was not released. No information was available about his condition.
