Car Flips on Freeway, Causes Crash; 2 Hurt
A driver reported going as fast as 85 m.p.h. veered off the Garden Grove Freeway on Monday afternoon and flipped, causing a truck to jackknife and collide with another car, Highway Patrol officials said.
Kenneth Ray Jones, 21, of Villa Park was speeding and making “unsafe” lane changes on the westbound freeway at 2:50 p.m. when he lost control of the car, California Highway Patrol Officer Don Karol said. Jones drove up a dirt embankment, causing his car to flip onto its roof.
Moments before, Jones passed in front of a truck pulling two empty cement mixers. The truck driver, trying to avoid hitting Jones’ car, jammed on his brakes, causing the truck to jackknife in front of a car. The driver of that car could not stop in time and slammed into the truck, Karol said.
The driver of the car, Quanh Quynh Duong, 42, of Santa Ana, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with back pain and was listed in fair condition. The truck driver was not injured.
Jones was treated at the same hospital.
The Villa Park motorist was “just very fortunate,” Karol said. “He didn’t want to have his back X-rayed or anything. He just walked away from the hospital.”
Caltrans and CHP crews worked for two hours to clear the freeway of wreckage spread over three lanes.
