Reagan’s Farewell

As an addendum to your Reagan library story (“Calm Prevails After Pomp of Presidential Library’s 1st Months,” May 24), I would like to alert any intended visitor to the library to find and read Reagan’s farewell address that is affixed to a wall of a dingy, dimly lit, hard to find room and appearing as though the library had to hang it somewhere but was ashamed of it.

The address as I remember it goes something like this: I’ve spoken of the shining city, a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace (with apologies to the riots of 1992). How stands the city this winter night? More prosperous, more secure and happier then it was eight years ago. We made the difference and left the city in good hands. All in all not bad at all. Ronald Reagan--Jan. 11, 1989.

Whether it delights or disgusts the reader, it will be a reminder of the person who occupied the White House and bankrupted this country both financially and morally.

One will wonder and ask if Reagan was speaking of the United States when he said we were more happy and secure than we were eight years ago and will wonder why we are in total collapse when only three years ago Reagan told us we were on rock-solid ground.
