Video Rentals : ‘Fear’ Throws Scare Into ‘Bride’

Though some video retailers are reporting “Father of the Bride” is their most popular rental, most are saying that “Cape Fear,” the thriller featuring Robert De Niro, is their biggest hit. Billboard magazine confirms those “Cape Fear” reports. The movie shot to the top of the rental chart in just two weeks, toppling “JFK” and racing past “Father of the Bride.”

* The cult crowd has already latched on to director David Cronenberg’s wildly imaginative, bug-filled version of William Burroughs’ hallucinatory novel. Featuring Peter Weller, it wasn’t a big commercial success ($2.2-million gross) but it premiered at No. 16.
