CANYON COUNTRY : Boy Sent to Youth Camp for Stabbing
A 16-year-old boy convicted of stabbing a fellow Canyon High School student in December will be allowed to serve his time in a Los Angeles County Probation Department youth camp rather than at a California Youth Authority facility.
The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was convicted in March of attempted murder with the special allegation that a knife was used and that great bodily injury was caused.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Cecilia Barajas said the Probation Department will determine how long the teen-ager will serve before being released on probation, but it would be no longer than until his 25th birthday.
According to court records, the stabbing occurred after an incident Dec. 6 when the defendant and another teen-ager, Pat Butterfield, fought during lunchtime at a fast-food restaurant near Canyon High School in Canyon Country.
Three hours later, as the victim was waiting for his mother to pick him up in a school parking lot, the defendant and two boys approached him.
As the boys began beating Butterfield, the defendant stabbed him in the stomach with a jackknife, according to testimony.
