Jewish Music Under the Stars

The Brandeis-Bardin Institute will commence its popular “Under the Stars” summertime concert series this weekend.

Celebrating an array of Jewish music, the four-concert program begins Sunday with “A Sephardic Celebration,” featuring mezzo-soprano Isabelle Ganz of the acclaimed ensemble Alhambra.

“Isabelle is an internationally renowned musician,” said the institute’s artist-in-residence, David Low.

Ganz will be joined by John Bilezikjian--playing the oud, a stringed instrument of the Middle East--for a concert that explores the traditions and modern vitality of Sephardic music. Concerts will be held at a scenic amphitheater, nestled in the institute’s 3,100-acre site in the Santa Susana Mountains.

“It’s more than a celebration of Jewish culture, but a celebration of all music in a beautiful setting,” Low said. “This mountaintop setting provides wonderful natural acoustics.”

Future concerts:

* July 12: “An Evening of Chamber,” featuring the Brandeis-Bardin Ensemble. The ensemble, which includes members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra, will perform works by Prokofiev, Mendelssohn and more.

* July 26: “Fiora Feidman: King of Klezmer!” “He’s probably the most acclaimed klezmer musician in the world,” Low said.

* Aug. 16: “From 2nd Avenue to Broadway,” presented by the American Center for Music Theater and the institute’s Young Artists. Concert highlights include songs and scenes from the Yiddish theater and Broadway.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m.; gates open at 5. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring sweaters and picnic snacks. Admission is $15, and advance purchase is encouraged as concerts are likely to sell out. Brandeis-Bardin Institute is at 1101 N. Pepper Tree Lane, Simi Valley. Call 582-4450 or 582-4480.
