‘Sarafina!’ Screening Helps AFI Net More Than $100,000

American Film Institute’s International Film Festival opened June 18 with a screening of “Sarafina!” at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Entertainment Weekly sponsored the gala. More than $100,000 has been donated to AFI by Entertainment Weekly, California Arts Council, Films Inc. Home-Vision and AT&T; to underwrite the festival, which will run another week.

Boy Scouts of America, Los Angeles Area Council, will receive about $200,000, net proceeds from the 10th annual Boy Scouts/Los Angeles Raiders Invitational Tournament at the Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades. Former Heisman Trophy winner O. J. Simpson, Jack Tatum, Jim Otto, Willie Brown, actor James Garner and corporate leaders participated in the June 15 event to help raise funds for the Boy Scouts’ Handicapped Program.

St. John’s Hospital and Health Center’s support group, the Irene Dunne Guild, has donated $32,000 to purchase 24 VCRs for patients experiencing long hospital stays and for a computer system to provide health information to female patients.

ERAS (Educational Resources & Services) Center will receive more than $65,000 raised at the May 29 Pro/Am Tennis and Golf Tournament at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad. The three-day fund-raiser was sponsored by American Airlines, Hilton International, Foundations of the Milken Family, Qantas Airways and Ticketmaster. The center provides educational and therapeutic services for children and young adults with learning difficulties and other challenges.
