Los Angeles’ Mecca of motorcycles located where Mulholland Highway becomes a country lane. Each Sunday hundreds of bikers make the pilgrimage to congregate at a nondescript roadside joint called the Rock Store.

Cruise by at noon and you’ll see dozens of motorcycles parked out front: low-slung Harleys, mammoth touring cycles and streamlined Japanese racing bikes with their multicolored fairings. It’s a gantlet of gleaming chrome.

The riders are as interesting to look at as their machines. Some guys wear black jackets and bandannas. Others are encased in bright racing leathers. Women walk around in fringed chaps and T-shirts. They come for a cheeseburger and a beer and mostly to shoot the breeze out front.

“It’s amazing how everyone gathers here. I never dreamed anything like this would ever happen,” said Ed Savko, the owner, who may have started the trend years ago by parking his motorcycle in front of the store-restaurant. Of course, Savko has a little geography going for him. “It’s a great place to ride, in these hills,” he said.

Sometimes a celebrity will pull up, maybe Jay Leno or Arnold Schwarzenegger, always a bonus for out-of-towners.

After the Rock Store, you can follow Mulholland Highway through the canyons to the beach, or you can cut over to Las Virgenes Canyon Road and visit the ornate Venkateswara Hindu Temple.

The Rock Store is at 30325 Mulholland Highway. Call (818) 889-1311.
