Bill Would Bar Streamlined Meat Inspections: The House Appropriations Committee wants to end a streamlined meat-inspection system that critics say has allowed tainted beef to reach consumers. The panel voted to bar the use of federal funds for those beef inspections after April 1, 1993. Five slaughterhouses that provide about 20% of the nation’s beef are under the streamlined inspection system, or SIS.
