Reader Fires a Volley at Description of Borg
Thomas Bonk’s article on John McEnroe (June 21) perpetuates the myth that Bjorn Borg’s confrontations with Mac at Wimbledon presented the contrasts of a “serve-and-volley aggressor” (McEnroe) against “a ground-stroking baseliner” (Borg). This depiction of Borg as a one-dimensional baseline player is absolutely untrue. In fact, after Borg took a sixth-month sabbatical from the tour when he was 19 to improve his serve, he played a serve-and-volley game on grass. Contrary to Bonk’s article, at Wimbledon Borg followed his first serve to the net on virtually every point.
