Batmail Returns

In describing Tim Burton’s reluctance to direct “Batman Returns” (June 14), I was misquoted as saying: “I think he would have been happy to have this film wind up a mess like ‘Alien 3.’ ”

What I had said was that Burton secretly desired a long, drawn-out development process much like the one “Alien 3” reportedly went through. The article obviously makes it sound as if I’m talking about the finished film. I’m a pretty big fan of the movie, so I was distressed to see myself come off, in an otherwise fine article, as such a jerk.
