According to sources, Warner Bros. and executive producer Oliver Stone are eager for the Rev. Jesse Jackson to narrate the theatrical trailers for the upcoming film “South Central,” which the studio has acquired for distribution.

Described as “violent but uplifting,” the film, which will be released this fall, is the story of a black man’s struggle to keep his son out of gang life in South-Central Los Angeles. Directed by Steve Anderson, the film stars Glenn Plummer and Byron Minns and is based on Donald Bakeer’s book, “Crips.”

According to a spokesman for Stone, who is a longtime supporter of Jackson, it was Stone’s idea to have Jackson narrate the trailer. The spokesman said that Stone and Warner Bros. are still waiting for a decision, but added, “Oliver really hopes it develops.”

“This will really be the first film with this setting that’s been released since the riots,” a studio insider said, “and we knew that we were going to have to take a different approach.” The trailer is reportedly close to completion; the studio is simply waiting to hear whether Jackson will agree to do the voice-over.

Contacted recently, Frank Watkins, the Rainbow Coalition’s director of communications, said Jackson wasn’t aware of any offer. “He wouldn’t be philosophically opposed to doing something that would be consistent with his work, but we have to find out more about it.”
