A feast offering food for all the senses awaits the South Bay on Sunday at Summer Festival 1992, a multimedia fiesta sponsored by the Angels Gate Cultural Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Visitors to the free festival can bask in jazz music under the sun, chat with resident artists during a self-guided studio tour and partake in a garden buffet.

To tour the artists’ studios, pick up a map in the cultural center’s main office in Building A. From there, a good place to begin is the Studio Gallery, where an informal exhibit will help visitors decide which of the 20 open studios to explore by first offering a glimpse of each artist’s work.

During the tour, art lovers may have a chance to watch works in progress or to discuss ceramics, photography, painting, installations, sculpture or mixed-media works with some artists who will be available to talk about their media and technique. Some finished artworks will be on sale.

In the 3,000-square-foot Gate Gallery, visitors can continue their art immersion at the Angels Gate second annual members’ exhibition, featuring the eclectic work of eight Los Angeles artists in a conceptual show titled “On Site at the Gate.”

The show’s theme explores the concept of site, or “the place where something is, was, or is to be,” said Betsy Lohrer, Angels Gate spokeswoman.

The intimate show features 27 pieces of photography, sculpture, mixed-media and video works. All the pieces “speak to human experience,” Lohrer said.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the site of the old Ft. MacArthur military barracks in Angels Gate Park, 3601 S. Gaffey St. in San Pedro.

At 12:30, guests can spread a blanket and take in the sounds of Sea Jazz ’92 at the Angels Gate Park outdoor amphitheater. The music begins with the salsa of Latin jazz group Bobby Redfield with the Garcia Brothers, followed at 2 p.m. by the bluesy Bill Barrett Quintet. At 3:30, the distinctive Brazilian rhythm of Araca Azul takes the stage. There will also be a garden reception where a free catered buffet awaits guests.
