Rebuilding in Riot Areas

In response to “Reaching Out to Rebuild L.A.,” editorial, June 15:

I agree wholeheartedly that the efforts to rebuild Los Angeles will and must come largely from the community as a whole. However, as a college student at UCLA, I feel that there is one important group that has been overlooked by many people. That group is the younger generation. From the names included in the editorial, I can only infer that most are older men and women from strong leadership backgrounds. I also realize that there is a greater than common view that the youth of today are apathetic to politics and problems, but here is where I disagree.

The younger generation can offer fresh, new insight into the Rebuild L.A. effort. College students are far less conservative and tend to be involved in many campaigns to better the ills of society. Although I understand we lack experience and, therefore, cannot hope to be included on such a board, it is my hope that Peter Ueberroth and the rest of the Rebuild L.A. group do not turn their backs to the ideas and suggestions of younger generations. Be it through polls, surveys, discussion groups or whatever, keeping the lines of communication open between the young and old is important. We cannot forget that it is my generation that will be around tomorrow to live with the decisions made today.
