A suspected drunk driver killed two women in a parked car and critically injured the bystander early Saturday when he drove off the Ventura Freeway onto the shoulder just south of Bates Road near Rincon Point, the California Highway Patrol said.

Alicia Cranney, 26, of Santa Maria died of chest injuries and Sonia Schneider, 25, of Santa Barbara died of head injuries, said Ventura County Deputy Coroner Dale Zentzis. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene about 3:25 a.m. Saturday, Zentzis said.

Jacqueline Antles, 31, of Goleta was in critical condition at St. Francis Medical Center in Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon, a nursing supervisor said.

Arturo Quintero, 22, of Panorama City drove his car off the northbound lane onto the shoulder and hit two parked cars that had had mechanical problems, the CHP said.

Cranney and Schneider were in one of the parked cars, and after they were rear-ended, their car was thrust forward and hit Antles, who was on foot.

Quintero was arrested on two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the CHP said. He was being held on $100,000 bail at Ventura County Jail on Sunday, authorities said. Quintero is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
