TRACK ROUNDUP : Thompson Won’t Be in Olympics

Daley Thompson a two-time Olympic decathlon champion, failed in a last-minute attempt to qualify for the Barcelona Games, missing the standard of 7,850 points he needed to get at the AAA championships meet Sunday at Birmingham, England.

David Bigham, 20, won the competition and qualified for the only decathlon spot on the British team.

South Africa’s Tom Petranoff threw the javelin 286 feet 3 inches, setting an African record on the final day of the African Athletics Championships in Pamplemousses, Mauritius.

South Africa won 16 gold medals in the four-day competition and more than 40 medals altogether. Kenya and Nigeria each won 15 medals.

Kenya’s Sammy Lelei, 27, won the Cascade Run Off 15-kilometer race at Portland, Ore., beating countryman Godfrey Kiprotich by five seconds in 42 minutes 42 seconds.

In the women’s open division, Uta Pippig, 26, of Germany defeated New Zealander Helen Moros in 49:42.

Steve Spence, a member of U.S. men’s Olympic marathon team, won the Fairfield, Conn., Half Marathon in a course-record 1 hour 4 minutes 15 seconds for the 13.1 miles.
