ORANGE COUNTY PLATFORM : Programs Help Avoid Magnet of Gangs

It is virtually impossible for one agency to battle the presence of gangs, or attempt to steer those away who may one day be flirting with the idea of joining a gang. We all have to work together to build meaningful programs that truly benefit the youth.

Collaboration among city government, school districts, the police force, community leaders and parents is essential.

In light of ongoing budget cuts, this cooperation could also serve as a cost-cutting measure by enabling a pooling of resources by the different agencies, thus avoiding duplication in programs. Building programs that help and educate the youth--self-esteem classes, job fairs, programs to help young kids with resume writing or tips on looking for jobs--is an important step in dismantling the gang presence.

Parents must also be involved with the help of education programs that teach them the warning signs of gang activity or that open up the channels of communication between parent and son or daughter.

Gangs, and how to keep our children out of their grasp, should be a priority for all. If you need proof of its importance, the Los Angeles riots should serve as a worst-case scenario. Precautionary programs are always better in the long run.
