President Bush and Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari are expected to be in the stands when the Major League All-Star Game unfolds at Jack Murphy Stadium July 14, according to White House officials.

Administration sources say Bush is expected to discuss completion of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which would significantly increase commerce with Mexico and have far-reaching effects in the San Diego region.

White House officials are planning the trip, but it has not been formally announced.

The mid-season baseball game falls on the second night of the Democratic National Convention in New York City and allows the President to get some media attention without violating the political ground rule curtailing outright campaigning during a rival party’s convention.

Bush would travel to San Diego from his vacation home in Kennebunkport, Me., where he will spend a four-day weekend after returning from his overseas trip to Warsaw, Munich and Helsinki.

It is not known if Bush will stay overnight.

Afterward, Bush will travel to Wyoming for two days of fishing at a cabin owned by Secretary of State James A. Baker III. The President will return to California on Friday of that week on a campaign swing, but his itinerary has not been decided.
