James M. Boyd; Retired Police Officer

James M. Boyd Jr., who served on the Glendale police force for 28 years, has died at his Glendale home. He was 66.

Boyd died Thursday of heart failure, according to his daughter, Leslie Nicholas of Simi Valley.

Born in Fresno, Boyd came to Glendale in his early teens and attended Hoover High School. At age 17, he joined the Navy and served as a radioman on the USS Essex during World War II. He later attended Glendale College and worked for the Southern California Gas Co. In 1951, he joined the Glendale Police Department and became a detective in 1963. Boyd retired from the force in 1979 and later did security work for Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

Besides his daughter, Boyd is survived by his sons, Steve Boyd of Huntington Beach and Gregg Boyd of Montrose; sisters Donna Hutchinson of Whittier and Gerry Rogers of Glendale, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 11:30 a.m. today at the Church of the Recessional, Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, 1712 S. Glendale Ave., Glendale. Donations can be made to the American Heart Assn.
