Wallace’s Son Wins Primary Race for House
George Wallace Jr., heir to Alabama’s most famous political name, won a Democratic runoff for Congress on Tuesday.
Wallace defeated former Medicaid commissioner Faye Baggiano, who had hoped to become the first woman elected to Congress from Alabama. With all 744 precincts reporting, Wallace had 37,503 votes, or 57%. Baggiano had 28,355 votes, or 43%.
Wallace faces Republican Terry Everett of Enterprise in November.
Wallace, 40, in his second term as state treasurer, campaigned unabashedly as the son of former four-term Gov. George C. Wallace and the late Gov. Lurleen Wallace.
Baggiano, 49, played up the relationship’s negative side, dubbing Wallace “Junior” and telling voters he “never had a job his daddy didn’t get for him.” The elder Wallace, in poor health, was unable to campaign actively.
The race also was heated with Baggiano’s references to her opponent’s three divorces and allegations he plagiarized his platform, which he denied.
