Welfare Recipients

In response to “Welfare Recipients Sue State for More Aid,” June 18:

These women are upset that they have to shop at K mart and can’t afford meat. By living together their combined income ($1,165) plus food stamps ($290) is higher than many working families in Los Angeles.

Having been a single parent at one time and having worked two jobs to support my family, I know what it is like to do without or to settle for less. But at no time did I feel as though the taxpayers owed me a higher standard of living, i.e., nicer home, better food, or the ability to shop in pricier department stores.

The cost of living is high in California, especially in Los Angeles. If these people can’t afford to live here, they should move. They certainly don’t have jobs holding them here.
