LAKEWOOD : Gunman Kills Himself After Hourlong Standoff

Share

A gunman shot and killed himself Thursday in his Lakewood home after an hourlong standoff with deputies that forced the evacuation of neighboring homes, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The incident at 4101 Iroquois Ave. began about 6:40 a.m. when the man reportedly fired several shots into his neighbor’s unoccupied, parked vehicle, prompting a call to authorities, said sheriff’s spokesman Bill Martin.

“After deputies arrived, they called the suspect’s house by phone and the suspect’s 16-year-old daughter answered,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Angie McLaughlin said. Deputies asked the girl to leave the house, which she did, and just before 9 a.m. a 5-year-old girl also came out. They were apparently unharmed.

Shortly after 10 a.m., deputies heard a single gunshot from inside the house. An hour later they entered and found the 38-year-old man dead of an apparently self-inflicted head wound. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
