What’s red and white and blue all over? A clue: It’s the main event Saturday.

Two Independence Day celebrations will paint the South Bay red, white and blue Saturday: the city of Torrance’s daylong Fourth of July festival and fireworks and the South Torrance Lions Club’s “Discover America” fireworks show.

The city’s 12th annual old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration offers a full menu of family festivities beginning at 11 a.m. in Charles Wilson Park. The park’s baseball diamond will be transformed by an arts fair, carnival game booths and an international food emporium featuring Greek, Italian, Thai and Mexican cuisines and dozens of others from around the world.

Festival-goers can walk off those treats by touring 140 booths featuring handcrafted items from artisans throughout California or by trying their luck at the games such as octopus ring toss, cool pool or hockey shoot. Nintendo addicts may find that their hours of practice pay off in the Nintendo tournament sponsored by the local Campfire Girls and Boys’ Clubs. Most games cost from 50 cents to $1 to play.

Kids of all ages can ride the rails free on a miniature locomotive sponsored by the Torrance division of the Southern California Live Steamers. And free introductory tennis and paddle tennis lessons will be offered on the tennis courts from noon to 4 p.m.

While mom and dad try to master a racquet, youngsters can pucker up for the cracker whistle contest, the bubble gum blow or other competitions from noon to 4 p.m.

Musical entertainment begins at noon with a patriotic sing-along led by the Belcanto Singers. Two park stages will feature performances by local song and dance troupes all day leading to the 1950s crooning of the Fabulous Contours about 7 p.m.

When the sky finally grows dark, the day’s finale will begin. About 9 p.m., 600 shells are scheduled to be launched hundreds of feet into the air to light up the park in an explosion cascading color.

No alcohol is allowed in the park. A free shuttle for the event will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. between the park and Del Amo Fashion Center and the Civic Center. Free parking is available at both locations.

The Lions Club Fourth of July Show offers a chance to “Discover America” and contribute to community groups.

The celebration, which benefits local charities, begins at 7 p.m. with performances by clowns, roving puppets and three musical groups: the 35-member American Youth Express, Randy Zane Gray Country Western Band and the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band.

Three sky divers trailing plumes of colored smoke will introduce the evening’s finale and descend on El Camino College stadium as evening falls.

At 9 p.m., the “Discover America” fireworks show begins with aerial and ground-based pyrotechnics. Sets of fireworks on the ground shaped in various images will trace important eras and figures from American history. The half-hour thematic show will feature fireworks depicting “Panning for Gold,” “40 Hour Work Week,” “Kennedy and Neil Armstrong” and “John Wayne.”

The event is the club’s biggest fund-raiser of the year. Tickets range from $3 to $7. Last year the group raised $17,000 for programs such as the Torrance South Bay YMCA, Lions Clubs programs for the blind and hearing-impaired and school drug-awareness programs.

Parking is available at the stadium. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium box office beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
