Peter Campbell, a two-time Olympian and UC Irvine graduate, was the last player cut from the U.S. national water polo team, which begins Olympic play Aug. 1 against Australia.

Campbell, 32, who was named the NCAA player of the year after leading the Anteaters to the national championship in 1982, had left the team after the ’88 Olympics and was attempting a comeback.

Five players with Orange County ties made the team. Four played at UC Irvine--Jeff Campbell, Peter’s younger brother; Mike Evans; goalkeeper Chris Duplanty, and John Vargas, who also coaches at Corona del Mar High. The fifth, Doug Kimbell, is a graduate of Villa Park High.
