BURBANK : County to Weigh Big Boy’s Value
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is scheduled Tuesday to consider nominating for landmark status a Burbank Bob’s Big Boy restaurant that the owner wants to tear down and replace with an office building.
The county Historical Landmarks and Records Commission has twice sided with preservationists who want the structure preserved, despite the wishes of owner Peter MacDonald, who has called the building at Riverside Drive and Alameda Avenue an eyesore.
In hearings in April and March, the commission rejected the owner’s contention that the structure was not worthy of state landmark status.
The building, designed by architect Wayne McAllister, was constructed in 1949 and is a prime example of what preservationists call the “early coffee shop design” style that originated in Los Angeles.
If approved by the supervisors, the nomination will be forwarded to the state Office of Historic Preservation, which will make the final decision.
