Kirby, Reno Win First Event Together in Atlantic City

Third-seeded Karolyn Kirby of San Diego and Nancy Reno of Carlsbad captured the $40,000 Coors Light Atlantic City Open Sunday at Trump Plaza Beach Front in their first women’s pro volleyball event together.

Kirby, the tour’s season money ($48,300) and points (336) leader, and Reno defeated fourth-seeded Cammy Ciarelli of Huntington Beach and Jackie Silva of Redondo Beach, 15-11, in the finals to win the $9,400 first prize. Ciarelli and Silva earned $7,000 for second.

Sixth-seeded Gail Castro of Carlsbad and Lori Kotas of Oceanside finished in a fifth-place tie, earning $2,400. The second-seeded team of Angela Rock of Carlsbad and Janice Harrer of Honolulu tied for ninth and took home $1,100.

AUTO RACING

Scott Douglas of Ramona won the Class 7 open mini-pickup division of the High Desert Racing Assn. Fireworks 250 near Barstow. Douglas, racing a Dodge Dakota, finished in 5:17:27.

TRACK AND FIELD

Milena Glusac, a three-time San Diego Section 3,200-meter champion at Fallbrook High, easily won the 3,000 at The Athletics Congress-USA Junior Championships at Ohio Stadium’s Jesse Owens Track in Columbus, Ohio. Glusac clocked 9:48.23. Maribella Apariciao of Fillmore was second in 9:55.99. Erin Blunt, a former San Pasqual standout who will attend UCLA, was sixth in the 100 hurdles. She finished in 14.36. Dawn Burrell of Houston, sister of former men’s 100 world-record holder Leroy Burrell, won the event in 13.87.
