SAN CLEMENTE : Man Shot to Death Identified as Drifter
A man who died over the weekend from gunshot wounds was identified Monday as a drifter who had been living from motel to motel in the last month, police said.
Residents found Steven Lewis Coyne, 29, Sunday in an alley in the 2000 block of South El Camino Real, Sgt. Jim Thomas said.
Coyne had used several aliases and had a criminal record, but Thomas declined to elaborate.
Residents called police when they heard gunshots shortly before 7:30 p.m. Officers found Coyne lying on the ground with two gunshot wounds in his left shoulder.
He was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo and died about 9:30 p.m., Thomas said.
Detectives have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, Thomas said.
Coyne lived in San Clemente before moving to Corona in 1990, Thomas said.
He moved back a month ago, going from motel to motel.
He was in possession of a fake driver’s license from Iowa when he was shot, Thomas said.
