LOCAL NOTES : Ward Says He Isn’t Sure He Will Sign with Mets
Jon Ward, a first-round draft choice of the New York Mets, said Monday “it looks more and more like I’m going to college” as negotiations continue with the National League team.
Ward, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, was the 30th player selected in baseball’s amateur draft last month after compiling a 9-1 record with 113 strikeouts last season at Huntington Beach High.
“My (adviser) met with the Mets last week, but their offer is a little disappointing,” said Ward, who signed a letter of intent in May to attend Cal State Fullerton.
Last weekend, Ward led his Connie Mack League team, the Orange County Cardinals, to the championship of a tournament in Las Vegas.
