San Diego : Suspect in Slaying to Stay in Custody
The district attorney’s office Tuesday did not formally charge a gang member with killing an 18-year-old woman, but he will remain in custody for allegedly violating his probation, authorities said.
Wardell Monroe Campbell Jr., 19, is suspected of throwing a rock Friday that killed Monica Chapa of El Cajon, who had gotten off the San Diego Trolley in Logan Heights to use a restroom.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Victor Nunez said he expects murder charges to be filed against Campbell within a week.
In the meantime, Campbell is being held without bail at County Jail for violating the three-year probation sentence he received in February after pleading guilty to one count of battery with serious bodily injury.
Campbell’s guilty plea followed an Oct. 15 attack on a rival gang member near the Stockton Recreation Center on 32nd Street. A witness said Campbell and two associates used a rock to pummel Dashawn Nicholson, but the employee at the center could not say that Campbell personally used the weapon.
Nunez said a probation review hearing will be held July 28.
