SAN DIEGO : Union Protests State Budget Cuts
The union that represents two-thirds of the county’s work force took its concern about California’s budget directly to the downtown State Building on Wednesday, where about 80 protesters asked Gov. Pete Wilson to cut tax loopholes for the wealthy and develop two-year budgets.
The Service Employees International Union demonstrated against budget cuts that threaten to greatly reduce public services.
A two-year budget would soften “the blow to the citizens,” according to SEIU Service Council spokesman Gene Murray, who predicted that many programs will have to reduce service levels.
County administrators have said 100 workers may have to be laid off, on top of the about 2,000 positions that remain vacant. When the state makes its budget final, more employees may lose their jobs.
