San Diego : Sex Assault Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

Share

A Navy man accused of sexually assaulting eight young girls who were students in his Mormon Sunday school classes pleaded not guilty Wednesday to 43 felony charges of child molestation.

John Allen Midgett, 30, denied the charges--more than a dozen of which were filed Wednesday. He was ordered to stand trial Aug. 25. However, Superior Court Judge Frederic L. Link also scheduled a status conference for Monday, indicating that Midgett is seeking a plea agreement.

Midgett, a petty officer first class, is accused of molesting girls, ages 5 to 10, at churches in Rancho Penasquitos and Mira Mesa, as well as in several of their homes. Although most of the charges allege that Midgett sexually assaulted the girls, two charges carry potential sentences of 16 years in state prison because Midgett allegedly had regular access to the girls’ houses, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Oscar Garcia.
