The Major Soccer League, the only national professional soccer organization in the United States, folded after 14 seasons.

The indoor league’s demise occurred only two years before the World Cup, soccer’s top event, will be played in the United States, and leaves the country without a nationwide professional soccer league.

There hasn’t been a major national professional outdoor league since the North American Soccer League folded after the 1984 season, and the U.S. Soccer Federation has delayed plans for a new major outdoor league until after the World Cup.
