THE 9 TO 5 GUIDE TO COMBATTING SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Candid Advice From 9 to 5, the National Association of Working Women by Ellen Bravo and Ellen Cassidy (John Wiley & Sons: $9.95). Although Anita Hill’s testimony at the Senate confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas drew national attention to the phenomenon, this no-nonsense manual on how to identify, avoid and combat sexual harassment makes it clear that the problem is neither new nor isolated: Numerous surveys indicate that 32-64% of the women and 15-31% of the men polled have been harassed. Bravo and Cassidy emphasize that the real aim of this behavior is not sexual pleasure but gaining power over another person, and they demolish the notion that a man who pays a co-worker an innocent compliment will be slapped with a lawsuit. In addition to chapters offering advice to employees, employers and union officers, the authors provide a list of resources and a sample of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s form for filing harassment charges.
