Two-week-old Robert Shinn is on a ventilator and remained in critical but stable condition Sunday after receiving a heart transplant Friday, a hospital official said.

“We won’t take him off of the critical list until he is off the ventilator,” said Anita Rockwell of Loma Linda University Medical Center.

The boy was born to Charles and Renee Shinn. Charles Shinn is an officer with the Westminster Police Department.

The child suffered hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a condition in which part of the heart is non-functional.

Hospital officials said this was the 142nd operation of its kind at the medical center, and the chances for the baby’s survival are high.

“It’s hard to say when this baby will be taken off the ventilator,” Rockwell said. “This baby was extremely ill.”
