Notes on a Scorecard - July 13, 1992

Share

It’s too bad the Dodgers’ home stand couldn’t have been three days and the All-Star break 18 days. . . .

The Dodgers not only were mediocre, they were dull. They hit only three home runs and committed 24 errors during the 22 games. Average time of game was three hours. The most exciting performance was turned in by a pitcher, Pedro Astacio, who was with the Albuquerque Dukes when the home stand began and ended. . . .

Average attendance for the 18 dates was only 32,812. . . .

Sunday was only the second time since May 30 that the Dodgers and Angels won on the same day. . . .

Most unusual sight on Elysian Park Avenue Sunday was that of a vendor hawking umbrellas. . . .

For the first time, both the Dodgers and Angels are in last place during the All-Star break. . . .

Jim Abbott (4-11) has a lower earned-run average than Kevin Brown (14-4). . . .

All-star Mike Sharperson isn’t eligible for the top 10 in batting--the criteria is 3.1 plate appearances multiplied by the number of games the team has played--but neither is any other Dodger except Brett Butler, Jose Offerman and Eric Karros. . . .

St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Bob Tewksbury’s selection to the all-star team is an example of the good things that can happen to someone who throws strikes. . . .

Maybe Tom Lasorda should have called Bobby Valentine a couple of weeks ago to wish him good luck, instead of vice versa. . . .

Remember when pitchers used to throw to first base only when it meant something? . . .

The Evander Holyfield-Riddick Bowe heavyweight title fight was signed, sealed and delivered for Nov. 13 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas as long ago as early May. There were only two slight catches. Holyfield had to beat Larry Holmes June 19 and Bowe has to beat Pierre Coetzer Saturday night at the Mirage. . . .

Bowe is a prohibitive favorite to defeat the South African, but Coetzer is ranked No. 1 and Bowe No. 2 by the World Boxing Assn. “Politics,” says Rock Newman, the manager of Bowe. . . .

Bowe is supposed to receive $10 million for the two bouts. Roughly, it is $9 million for the Holyfield fight, and $1 million for the Coetzer fight. . . .

Former sports columnist John Schulian has signed to write the screenplay for an HBO movie about Mike Tyson. . . .

Most refreshing sports personality of the week was Larry Laoretti, who didn’t take himself seriously even after winning the U.S. Senior Open. . . .

Being a people person, I loved the leader board at the Anheuser Busch Classic that included David Peoples and Peter Persons. . . .

Michael Jordan did not resemble a future PGA Senior Tour golfer during that celebrity tournament in South Lake Tahoe. . . .

UCLA’s nonconference basketball schedule next season includes home games against the Melbourne Tigers, St. Louis, Athletes in Action, Santa Clara, University of San Diego, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Fullerton, Houston and Notre Dame. . . .

The Bruins’ game against St. Louis is part of the NIT preseason tournament, and there may be one other NIT game at Pauley Pavilion, and as many as two at Madison Square Garden. . . .

Road opponents on UCLA’s nonconference schedule are Georgia, Pittsburgh and Duke. . . .

Of the 39 past or present Bruin athletes and coaches who will represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games, 14 are involved in track and field and seven in swimming. . . .

When Brian McPhee upset David Wheaton in the Hall of Fame tournament the other day, McPhee was ranked 871st in the world. Funny, but I could have sworn he wasn’t any lower than 820th. . . .

David Booth, a 6-foot-7 forward who was the second-leading scorer in DePaul history, is a free agent who will play for the Lakers in the summer pro league. . . .

Trade rumor: Tomas Sandstrom from the Kings to the Detroit Red Wings for Jimmy Carson. . . . The presence of Eric Dickerson will give me an excuse to watch Raider exhibitions. . . .
