LOCAL NOTES : Graham to Join the U.S. Team for Federation Cup Play
Fountain Valley’s Debbie Graham will join Gigi Fernandez, Lori McNeil and Pam Shriver on the U.S. team, which opens Federation Cup play against Britain today in Frankfurt, Germany.
The United States, which has won this tournament--the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup--a record 14 times since its inception in 1963, is seeded sixth in the 32-team field.
Martina Navratilova, a six-time member of U.S. Federation Cup team, is bypassing the competition for the second consecutive year because of her commitment to World TeamTennis. Jennifer Capriati, sixth on the Virginia Slims rankings and No. 7 Mary Joe Fernandez also are skipping the tournament to concentrate on preparing for the Olympics.
Germany, with Wimbledon champion Steffi Graf and No. 9 Anke Huber on its squad, is seeded first. Defending champion Spain is seeded second.
