FILLMORE : Caltrans Postpones Bridge Construction
The California Transportation Commission voted Tuesday to postpone authorization of $8.6 million for a new highway bridge in Fillmore because Caltrans is still negotiating to acquire some of the property needed for the project.
The nine-member commission, which is charged with allocating funds for state road-improvement projects, agreed at its meeting in Sacramento to postpone financing and construction of the bridge until September, said Caltrans spokesman Steve Galuzzo.
Caltrans wants to replace the 16-foot-wide Bardsdale Bridge, which crosses the Santa Clara River, with a 32-foot-wide structure, Galuzzo said.
The new 1,600-foot-long bridge would be built 40 feet west of the old bridge. Portions of California 23 would also be realigned to connect the highway with the new bridge.
Galuzzo said Caltrans hit some snags in negotiations for some of the land needed for the project. However, the problems are being worked out and will not affect the cost of the new bridge, he said.
Once the project is approved, construction will begin immediately, Galuzzo said. The bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 1994.
