The Vail Eagles remained unbeaten in their first season of TeamTennis by defeating the Newport Beach Dukes, 27-24, Tuesday in Vail, Colo.

The Dukes pulled even, 21-21, when Rikard Bergh defeated David Pate, 6-5 (5-2), in men’s singles, the second-to-last set. But the mixed doubles team of Sandy Collins and Scott Davis beat Ronnie Bathman and Lise Gregory, 6-3, and the Eagles improved to 4-0.

The Dukes were playing their first match without Katrina Adams, who is expected to miss the rest of the season because of surgery to remove an ovarian growth. She was replaced by Gregory.

Amy Frazier, who missed the Dukes’ first two matches because of a prior tennis commitment in Japan, rejoined the team in Vail, but lost to Shaun Stafford, 6-4, in women’s singles. Stafford was a replacement for Lori McNeil, who is playing for the U.S. Federation Cup team in Frankfurt, Germany.

Collins and Stafford defeated Frazier and Gregory, 6-5 (5-3) in women’s doubles.

In men’s doubles, Bathman and Bergh defeated Davis and Pate, 6-4. Davis and Pate were ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles in 1991.
