OXNARD : Traffic-Impact Fee on Developers OKd

Share

Despite concerns that developers are being driven from Oxnard, the City Council on Tuesday approved a new fee that next year alone could add about $1,000 to the construction costs of a single-family home.

Council members voted 4 to 1 to approve a new traffic-impact fee that will be phased in over the next three years. As approved, the fee will increase the construction costs of a single-family home by about $1,000 next year.

If approved by the council next year, the fees could go up $985 the following year and another $998 in the third year.

The fee raises money for street improvement and construction necessary to handle road traffic resulting from new development.

Developers argued that they have been hit hard by the recession, and that higher fees could drive them from Oxnard. Councilman Michael Plisky cast the lone no vote, saying that developers are overburdened with fees.

Developers pay $2,791 per residential unit in traffic-impact fees to the city.

“We’re slowly killing the goose that lays the golden egg,” Plisky said.
