VENTURA : Comment Sought on Park Expansion Plan

Share

Ventura residents will have a chance this evening to comment on a proposed expansion of Arroyo Verde Park that includes construction of a 200-person barbecue area, officials said.

Expanding Arroyo Verde Park--located at the corner of Foothill and Day roads--is important because it will create another area for large groups to convene, said Debbie Solomon of the Ventura Parks and Recreation Department.

“Right now, we only have three areas that can be reserved by larger groups,” Solomon said.

The proposed barbecue center will include a covered picnic and food preparation area with sinks, two large barbecues, lighting and a children’s playground, said Ventura landscape architect Don Marquardt.

Officials also plan to construct 67 new parking places next to the park, Marquardt said.

The expansion has been in the planning stages since city officials learned that they had received a $376,000 federal grant to fund the project, Marquardt said.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in May, 1993, with a grand opening planned for August or September, Marquardt said.

The community meeting, to be held in the park’s Redwood Glen picnic area, begins at 6:30 p.m.
