San Diego : INS Agent Indicted in Smuggling Case
A U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service agent and seven members of a suspected Mexican smuggling ring were indicted on charges of illegally possessing 330 pounds of cocaine.
George Reyes, a 10-year INS veteran, was indicted on a federal drug charge on Tuesday, along with the other suspects. The indictment said cocaine was smuggled through the Tecate Port of Entry into the United States on July 8 as part of a conspiracy that included Reyes.
Reyes had been charged earlier with bribery counts involving a separate case. That case, filed June 8, charged Reyes with taking bribes totaling $600 in an alleged scheme to illegally smuggle migrants through his lane at the Port of Entry.
Reyes has pleaded innocent in that case. After that first case was filed, Reyes was suspended from his job.
