Venice : Wanted: Walls for Murals

Share

The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) is looking for walls in West Los Angeles and elsewhere on which to paint murals.

The Venice-based public arts program is seeking outdoor walls, visible to the public, at such sites as public buildings, businesses, community centers and nonprofit agencies.

SPARC plans to add 10 new murals during 1992-93 to the 46 already created through its “Great Walls Unlimited: Neighborhood Pride” murals program.

The walls must be in good condition and at least 20 feet by 10 feet in size.

The mural is put in place at no cost to the owner. A 10-year commitment to the mural is required.

SPARC officials said that the murals typically add value to the buildings on which they appear. “The building becomes a community landmark, passed and noticed every day by thousands of people,” an official said. “Visitors and tourists often seek out the murals in parts of town where they might otherwise rarely go.”

Wall owners who are interested should send a contact name, address and phone number to SPARC, along with a brief description of how the site is used and a slide or photo of the wall.

Deadline for submission is Aug. 1, although late submissions will be considered for the future.

SPARC is located at 685 Venice Blvd., Venice 90291. For information, call (310) 822-9560.
