A man suspected of being a serial bank robber dubbed “the Sheik” turned himself into federal authorities in San Diego this week.

Kevin Cyle Kassner, 32, of La Jolla surrendered to U.S. marshals Monday after FBI investigators identified him in local newspapers and television news broadcasts as a suspect in one of six holdups thought to be connected, FBI Agent Jack Kelly said.

Kassner has been charged with the June 22 robbery at Northeast Savings in the 5500 block of La Jolla Boulevard in San Diego.

The name “the Sheik” derives from the turban-like headgear worn by the robber in the first of the series of holdups between May 16 and June 30, Kelly said. The five remaining robberies are under investigation, Kelly said.
