Dr. Jerome K. Schaffer; General Practitioner

Dr. Jerome K. Schaffer, who practiced general medicine in Encino for 40 years, has died at his Van Nuys home. He was 68.

Schaffer died Tuesday of heart and kidney failure, said his wife, Freda Schaffer.

Born in Chicago, Schaffer served in the U. S. Army in Europe during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. After coming to California in 1951, Schaffer completed an internship at Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach.

He had been chief of staff at Encino Hospital and on staff at Encino Hospital, Tarzana Regional Medical Center and Northridge Hospital Medical Center. For the past decade, he served as a proctor at the Family Practice Center at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, the family practice residency program affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine.

In addition to his wife, Schaffer is survived by his daughters, Andrea McNichol of Los Angeles and Lauren Myers of Ashland, Ore.; son Jeffrey Lyle Schaffer of Oakland, and four grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills. Malinow & Silverman Mortuary in Los Angeles is handling the arrangements.

Donations can be made in Schaffer’s name to the American Heart Assn. or the National Kidney Foundation.
