TENNIS ROUNDUP : Edberg Latest Ranked Player to Fall at Stuttgart

Stefan Edberg became the latest ranked player to get ousted from the $1.04-million Stuttgart Grand Prix tournament Friday, as the top-seeded Swede lost to Andrei Medvedev, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals at Stuttgart, Germany.

Medvedev, a qualifier from Ukraine, dealt Edberg the same fate met previously by Germany’s Boris Becker and Michael Stich, Michael Chang, and Croatia’s Goran Ivanisevic, who lost Friday. Ivanisevic, seeded second, was beaten, 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, by seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa.

Medvedev will face Thomas Muster of Austria in the semifinals. Muster ousted the final German contender, Bernd Karbacher, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Ferreira will face Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, the 14th seed, who defeated Carlos Costa of Spain, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Spain, led by Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez, defeated Argentina, 2-1, in the Federation Cup quarterfinals and Australia, led by Nicole Provis, ousted Czechoslovakia, 2-1. Spain and Australia meet in one semifinal today, and the United States and Germany meet in the other.

Henrik Holm of Sweden defeated third-seeded Ivan Lendl, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the NationsBank Classic at Washington, and seventh-seeded Derrick Rostagno also reached the semifinals by defeating Gary Muller, 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-5).

Top-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia defeated No. 8 Amos Mansdorf, 7-6 (10-8) 6-2, and No. 6 MaliVai Washington beat Guillaume Raoux of France 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (10-8) in the other quarterfinal matches.
