Authorities said a man suspected of kidnaping a civilian Navy employee was being questioned after turning himself over to a sheriff’s deputy.

Clifford Lelikana Parker, 25, flagged down a deputy Friday night and said he knew authorities were seeking him, a Contra Costa County sheriff’s official said.

Walter John Wainwright, a vending machine money collector for the Alameda Naval Air Station, has been missing since Tuesday. Parker is the registered owner of the car involved in what authorities said appeared to be the kidnaping of Wainwright, his co-worker. Witnesses said they saw a man who appeared to be bound and gagged trying to escape from the trunk of a Ford Maverick parked outside Parker’s apartment. Three men allegedly shoved the victim back in the trunk and two men fled in the car. The third returned to Parker’s apartment.

Officials said they do not know if the man in the trunk was Wainwright. His Navy-issued van was found in Fairfield on Thursday.
