A car full of beach-goers, including six children, plunged off a bridge into the Los Angeles River on Saturday, leaving one girl dead and her sister in critical condition, officials said.

A car driven by Compton resident Maurice Robinson, 37, veered off the Long Beach Freeway near the 6th Street off-ramp and plunged into the river 60 feet below, Fire Department spokesman Bob Caldon said.

Police said Robinson’s car may have been cut off by another vehicle in the afternoon accident.

Two Long Beach men--Rafael Palomo Jr., 19, and Jesus Duran, 42--freed two girls who were trapped inside the car. The 7-year-old died later and her 10-year-old sister is in critical condition at St. Mary Medical Center. They were not identified.

Robinson was listed in stable condition at Memorial Medical Center and his 12-year-old daughter was treated for minor injuries. Three other children were also injured in the accident.
