LAPD Deployments

Share

On June 26, The Times printed an article that linked the continuing deployment of a ready response force in the Los Angeles Police Department South Bureau and Central Bureau to the gang problems in this city. On June 29, on my return from out-of-town business, I informed your reporter that these issues were definitely not linked. The ready response force was part of a continuing deployment de-escalation following the riots.

On July 9, another reporter called to inquire about another step being taken on further deployment de-escalation. He too was informed that the gang problem (including the gang truce aspect) was not related to this deployment. Nonetheless, another article appeared linking the deployment and the gang issue. My direct comment on this point was omitted in the article.

It’s important for the citizens of Los Angeles to know that these issues are not linked. Gang truce activity is obviously commendable. Gang members, and others assisting them, should continue to work on crime reduction secure in the knowledge that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing nothing to impede that endeavor.
