Chi Chi Rodriguez birdied the last six holes and shot an eight-under-par 64 Saturday during the second round of the Ameritech Senior Open to trail George Archer by one stroke.

Rodriguez couldn’t overcome what Archer called “the hottest streak I’ve ever had” that began Friday and extended through the first five holes during the second round at Aurora, Ill.

Archer, who birdied seven of the last 10 holes Friday, birdied four of the first five Saturday to go 10 under par. He lost a shot on No. 12 but birdied the 16th and 18th for a 66-67--133, 11 under for the two rounds.

Rodriguez’s six birdies in a row was the best streak on the tour this year but fell short of his record of eight at Oklahoma City in 1987.

His 64 tied the Stonebridge Country Club tournament record set by Bob Charles last year, giving him a two-round total of 134. Rodriguez is tied for second place with Jim Dent, who shot 68.

After shooting a two-under-par 69, her highest score in three days of play, Juli Inkster extended her lead to eight strokes in the $500,000 Big Apple Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y.

Inkster completed three rounds in 199, 14 under par for the 6,109-yard Wykagyl Country Club and seven shots under the previous best score for 54 holes, established last year by Betsy King on her way to the title.

Jane Geddes, who also shot 69, was at 207.

Ed Dougherty had 10 birdies during a round of 62, breaking the two-day-old Council Fire Golf & Country Club record and tying Mitch Adcock for the lead after three rounds of the $800,000 Chattanooga Classic.

Dougherty, 10 shots back of 36-hole leader Dan Halldorson when the third round began, shot 31-31 in breaking the record of 63 set by Halldorson on Thursday.

Dougherty birdied Nos. 8-11 to get to seven under, then birdied three of the last four holes to complete three rounds at 16-under 200.

Adcock got even with Dougherty at the par-five 18th when he made a 50-foot birdie putt for a 64.

Warren Schutte of Las Vegas made a 20-foot putt for par on the 16th hole to close out Rich Mayo of El Paso, 3 and 2, and win U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Brooklyn Park, Minn.
